What is the key difference between an orangery and a conservatory?
The biggest difference is that a conservatory usually has around 75% of the roof glazed, whereas an orangery has less than 75% of the roof glazed. This means that conservatories are great for bringing the outside in, however orangeries are aesthetically pleasing and great for achieving the “wow-factor”.
What is an orangery?
Today orangeries, or ‘orangery extension’, have become a popular alternative to the more traditional conservatory. Typically boasting a brick base and a flat glass roof with a lantern roof, an orangery is the perfect blend between a brick extension and a conservatory.

What is a conservatory?
A conservatory, on the other hand, has a glass roof and glass walls, encouraging the natural light to flow through your house creating a sense of open space. “But won’t this amount of glass let lots of heat escape?”. Worry not – modern conservatories have insulated glazing meaning they are energy-efficient and even comfortable in the warmer months.

Do I need planning permission for either an orangery or a conservatory?
The installation of an orangery or a conservatory generally tends to be permitted developments that do not require planning permission. However, we would advise that you contact your local council who will confirm whether this is the case.
