What is a fascia and what is a soffit?

Did you know that roofline products are equally as important as your double-glazing? And did you also know that this is something Halstead Glass can help with? Roofline products, more specifically fascia boards and soffits, play a significant role in the protection and security of your home, acting as a barrier to prevent moisture from penetrating your roof.

What is a fascia board?

Guttering and fascia installation

The fascia board is the long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof. Fixed directly to the lower ends of the roof, the fascia more commonly does all the work of supporting the lower edge of the bottom row of tiles.

When the roof has flush eaves – the edge is in close proximity to the property’s external walls – fascia boards can be attached directly onto the exterior wall. However, when there is a gap – known as a closed eaves – the edge of the roof needs a soffit to protect the roof and carry the gutters.

What is a soffit?

Neatly tucked away under the fascia board is the soffit. The position of the soffit essentially creates a box around the edge of the roof, which requires ventilation to avoid condensation and decay. Fortunately, most soffit boards have ventilation built in.

The importance of fascia boards and soffits for your Essex home

These two products, alongside barge boards, play a significant role in the protection and security of your home, acting as a barrier to prevent moisture from penetrating the roof. Therefore, it is important to maintain them.

Regular checks are needed in older homes, homes that have not had much in terms of maintenance, or where the previous homeowner has chosen wood for the fascia and soffits. They can last for years, but neglect can take its toll and cause cracking, leaks, unwanted visitors in the attic and many other problems if not addressed by specialists.
